A gang of 17 thieves steals a gold box. They meet outside of town to split up the booty… but when they open the gold box, it turns into a burlap bag. They open the burlap bag and it is full of gems of all kinds. In trying to share the gems in equal number, there are three gems left over that remain. There is an ensuing fight over these three gems. One of the gang members is killed. In the second attempt to equally distribute the number of gems, there are now 10 gems remaining to be split up, but it’s not equal. Again the gang fights, and another thief dies. But the third attempt at equally splitting up the gems is now successful. How many gems are there?
